Convincing clever, frosty Abbie to give Will a chance will take more than mistletoe, but hiding his lifelong crush on her is no longer an option. When a blizzard leaves Will and Abbie alone at Grandma Farrell’s house (if bunking with 27 pets counts as ‘alone’), it’s the perfect opportunity to pull off a Christmas miracle. (Apparently, it’s a good one.) Winning ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ was nice, but this Christmas, he has more important goals in mind… like finally winning over his best friend’s little sister, the super-smart and kinda-scary Abbie Farrell. William Reid is nothing special, except for his billion-dollar acting career and his, you know, face. Unfortunately, despite the many claims of how good this story is, it didn’t work for me and effectively threw me out of my romance mood. I borrowed the audiobook of Wrapped Up in You from the library. That story was entertaining and made me want to try more of Hibbert’s work. I picked it up shortly after completing Hibbert’s Get a Life, Chloe Brown. But I didn’t get to it until this January. Since I was in the mood for romance novels at the time, I added it to my TBR. This novella was very popular this past Christmas. ![]() ![]() ![]() We knew that Born Ready would totally be on the radar for our NYC parents, so we caught up with Jodie Patterson to dive deeper into what this book is all about. And if we do that - if we have the “beyond representation” mindset - we (kids and parents alike) just might discover what it means to love, learn from, and accept the people in our lives who are different from us. Instead, let’s look at how and why these communities are being represented. Yes, Born Ready is the trans, queer, and Black representation that we need, but let’s think beyond representation. We got the scoop on this must-read book, beautifully illustrated by Charnelle Pinkney Barlow, that puts gender identity and gender fluidity in conversation with young readers and their parents. And in her debut children’s book, Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope, Jodie Patterson reminds us how to be there for our kids when they do. They teach us something new, something that opens up our perspective and redefines the way we relate to others. But every now and then, our kids surprise us. We learn how to talk to our kids about the world around us, we learn how to prioritize time for ourselves, we learn how to raise our little ones amidst a growing digital landscape (from TikTok to the new Instagram for kids and everything in between). Here at New York Family, we know that parenting is all about learning. ![]() Photo: Yumi Matsuo Jodie Patterson Social Activist Children’s Book - Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope ![]() ![]() ![]() The one book that has the most meaning to me.-David Maloof "Boston Globe" ( 12:00:00 AM) There is a powerful, age-old resonance to the story, centered on that intangible, steadfast bond between mother and child.-Shelley Fralic "National Post" ( 12:00:00 AM) 1 Favorite, 50 Great Children's Books-Susan Belkapp, Maggie Beidelman and Craig Reem "OC Family" ( 12:00:00 AM) ![]() It's even more poignant when you learn that Munsch wrote the book as a memorial to two still-born children he and his wife had in 19.-Dana Lenetz "Forbes" ( 12:00:00 AM) I dare anyone to read this story and not shed at least one tear by the end.
